As human beings, we all have needs. Some of these needs are shared universally, while others are more personal and unique. The same applies to leaders. When I reflect on the fundamental needs of a leader, one word consistently comes to mind: encouragement.
I have a big personality, I live an extraordinary life, and I often find myself in the public eye—sometimes receiving attention I don’t always seek. Recently, I realized that beyond the attention, what I truly crave is encouragement. I would argue that encouragement is a basic human need, but it’s especially vital for leaders.
Leadership is challenging. It can be frustrating and discouraging at times. Leaders face frequent criticism, often in the open, and must navigate the weight of others’ expectations. In those moments, encouragement becomes not just a kind gesture, but a vital lifeline.
