This is the prayer of St. Francis (or one of them at least). There are different iterations of this and no one really knows which one is exactly correct, however the spirit, message and theme of the prayer is pretty consistent. I believe this is a great prayer for every Christ-follower, but especially pastors and other ministry leaders. It is consistent with Jesus’ ability to afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted. It is also a great prayer to use/consider in helping us to see God in everyday life, to find God and sense the work of the Holy Spirit in every moment, task, conversation, and relationship.
Prayer of St. Francis
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace
Where there is hatred, let me sow love
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy;
O divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console,
To be understood, as to understand
To be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
It is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
